Contractors should consider several factors before renting a dumpster. While most general contractors may already know what type of dumpster they need based on the project's size, it is beneficial to review the available options. Operations Manager Jose Rivera and Logistics Manager Aida Rodriguez offer guidance on selecting the appropriate dumpster. This guide provides information on the uses of 20, 30, and 40-yard dumpsters.
When looking for a dumpster, a contractor should consider the type of debris they have, as well as the location they want the dumpster to be at, and its volume. This information is necessary because certain items may not be acceptable to place in the dumpster, or if it’s a residential, some may not have the space to hold a dumpster for three days or more. In addition, extra costs may apply. It’s best to have this information readily available when booking to determine the appropriate size of the dumpster that is needed.
The 20-Yard
The 20-yard dumpster is perfect for handling large loads, such as dirt, road base, and brick or block debris, making it ideal for residential clean-outs and remodeling projects. Since most household items are lightweight, this dumpster can be conveniently loaded by hand without requiring machinery. With a capacity of up to 8 pickup truck loads and a weight limit of 5 tons, it offers both efficiency and convenience. "If you're working with a landscaper, a 20-yard dumpster is a versatile choice since they prioritize weight over volume," Rivera explained. As a result, this smaller dumpster is often the best option.
The 30-Yard
Aida Rodriguez, Logistics Manager, shared that the 30-yard dumpster is the most versatile option and a top choice among home remodelers and larger general contractors. With a capacity of 14 pickup truck loads and a maximum weight limit of 5 tons, it also stands out as the safest to use. Rodriguez stated, “The 30-yard is easier to reach when loading by hand, thus reducing the risk of injury.” Rivera added, "I think people often assume bigger is always better, but that's not the case." The 30-yard dumpster accommodates a wide range of debris while also helping to minimize liability for companies.
The 40-Yard
For large-scale construction, remodeling, and demolition projects, the 40-yard dumpster is often the preferred choice. It can accommodate up to 16 pickup truck loads of bulky materials while maintaining a maximum weight limit of 6 tons. Anthony Zuniga, General Superintendent at DL Bandy, shared that their team typically opts for 30- or 40-yard dumpsters due to the scale of their projects. In some instances, a 40-yard dumpster may be required for residential use if there is a large quantity of items. Rivera shared, “sending a smaller dumpster would be a disservice to the customer.”
